Getting started
Installation on Windows, macOS and Linux, the first launch, and where the data is stored.
Desktop Qur'an is free of charge and requires no account. Download the file for your operating system from the Download section of the product page, then follow the steps below.
Windows
- Run
DesktopQuran_<version>_x64-setup.exe. - If Windows SmartScreen shows a warning, choose More info, then Run anyway. The warning appears because the application has not yet been downloaded widely, not because of a problem.
- Follow the installer. The application is available in the Start menu as Desktop Quran.
macOS
- Open
DesktopQuran_<version>_aarch64.dmg. - Drag the Desktop Quran icon into the Applications folder.
- Open the application from Launchpad or the Applications folder. The application is signed and notarized by Apple.
The application is currently available for Macs with Apple silicon only (M1 and later).
Linux
- Download
DesktopQuran_<version>_amd64.AppImage. The file does not need to be installed. - Give it permission to run: right-click the file, choose Properties, and tick Allow executing file as program; or, in a terminal,
chmod +x DesktopQuran_*.AppImage. - Open the file. Every library it needs is included.
The first launch
On the first launch the application asks for your language, then prepares its data: the text of the Qur'an, the tajweed mapping, the translation and its search index, and the fonts and pages of the mushaf. This takes less than a minute and is done once. Afterwards the application works without an internet connection.
The language can be changed at any time under View → Language. The translation for that language is installed when the language is first chosen.
Where the data is stored
| Operating system | Folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | %APPDATA%\org.manara.quran\ |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/org.manara.quran/ |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/org.manara.quran/ |
The folder holds the database quran.db (text, translations, bookmarks, favourites, search history, settings), the mushaf fonts, and an audio/ folder with the recitations you have downloaded. Deleting the folder returns the application to its initial state.
